To prevent skin from getting caught between the moving rings, it is recommended to use bit guards. Large rings have a more indirect effect than smaller rings. The large rings create a wider distribution of pressure on the cheeks. As a result, a horse becomes easier to steer and the bit is less likely to be pulled through the mouth. Additionally, a slight leverage effect can be achieved with these large rings.
